Santiago de Compostela is the capital of the autonomous region of Galicia, and is located the northwestern part of Spain. Principal manufactures in the city include linen, soap, processed food, and religious articles.

Santiago de Compostela has been a major place of pilgrimage in the Roman Catholic church since the 9th century, when the discovery was made nearby of the alleged bones of the apostle Saint James the Great (“Santiago” is Spanish for Saint James).

One of the most famous medieval buildings in the city is the fine Romanesque cathedral, consecrated in 1128, which now contains the tomb of Saint James. The University of Santiago de Compostela (1501) is located in the city.

Among the many points of interest the city has to offer, is the Plaza del Obradoiro, where the Gelmirez palace, the Hospital Real, the Rojoy Palace are located. Then the Plaza de las platerias (fuente de los caballos, Casa del Cabildo) and the Plaza de la Quintana (Berenguela, Torre del Reloj and the Monastery of San Pelay de Antealtares) are worth seeing.

Santiago de Compostela's population is about 110,000.
